The magic of an enchanted place
Lake Maggiore is the second largest Italian lake after Lake Garda. This lake, known as Lacus Verbanus at the time of Plinius and Strabone, has the honour of being among the most beautiful and unique locations known. In the area of Sesto Calende and Castelletto Ticino the landscape is flat, whereas approaching Arona and Angera it becomes hilly, and then undulating, with a succession of mountains and hills as one gradually proceeds north. The waters of Lake Maggiore lap against the Lombardy shore of the Province of Varese,
the Swiss shore of the Ticino canton and the Piedmont shore of the province of Novara, and to the north of the Azur province of Verbano-Cusio Ossola (Verbania). The Piedmont shore from Arona to Cannobbio is without doubt the most “magical”, in addition to having always enjoyed great attention on the part of older civilisations, the Sforzas, the Viscontis, the Austrian Empire, the Sardinian State with Carlo Emanuele III of Savoy, the Borromeos and Eugenio Napoleone, viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy.
From a tourism – administrative perspective, the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore hosts the major centres, and is the most picturesque. It is rich in villas and gardens recalling the “Belle epoque”, and boasts the most sought-after locations for holidaymakers. Manzoni, along with famous poets such as Goethe Stendhal, Dumas, Flaubert, etc. all stayed here. Architectural wonders, period palaces, Romanesque churches, ancient hamlets, splendid villas, unique buildings, botanical gardens, splendid hotels, all of which blend so harmoniously with the lake and the greenery of the hills to make this one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the world. A unique, magical and enchanted place, much-loved by tourists from abroad, and by city-dwellers who choose Lake Maggiore as a place to stay and in which to invest, by buying property (real estate), apartments, villas, houses to refurbish, property investment, period buildings, land etc. An area with a veritable wealth of lakes, such as Lake Orta, Lake Mergozzo and Lake Varese, all surrounded by the greenery of the mountains and valleys, the hamlets, the rich historical heritage, all make this a place worthy of a visit.
